More Davaoenos feel good about segregation
The move to save mother earth need not be big. In fact it can start in your very own home. Segregating trash, to recycle and reuse, will hep the environment.
This is what Evangeline Hernaez, Julienne Mumar and Al Perono have been doing. Three Davao City residents who participated in NCCC Cares' Buy Back Fair held September 25 at NCCC Mall Davao, Parking C.
On October 30, the Buy Back Fair returned to Parking C of NCCC Mall Davao to accommodate more recyclers. Collections started from 8am until 5pm.
First time participant Evangeline, a resident of Ma-a, said that "Sayang kung ilabay lang namo ang mga butang na magamit pa. Our waste might be treasure to others." She added that it is a must for every household to do waste segregation to minimize the garbage in the city. Evangeline donated old books and magazines of her children as well as e-wastes like air conditioner, water dispenser and clothes dryer.
College student Julienne is an ardent supporter of various scrap buying activities. Like the others, she is thankful for the opportunity to turn her trash into cash. "Usa ni ka paagi aron maka-kwarta ko ug extra aside sa akong allowance."
"To avoid getting caught with dengue fever," Al cites this reason why he turned in 316 kilos of rubber tires from his backyard. ?Kaysa puy-an siya ug lamok na hinungdan sa dengue, ako na kining gibaligya.?
There were also stores inside NCCC Mall Davao that participated in the fair such as Dennis the Grill Boy, Time Zone and South Brews Coffee Shop. The said stores donated bottles, cartons, tin cans and newspapers. Time Zone and South Brews are first-time donors of scrap items.
We regularly participate in this activity because it helps us dispose our garbage properly, says Gerlie Rocacurva, assistant supervisor of Dennis the Grill Boy.
For the month of September, a total of 1,026.6 kilos of scrap were collected. Papers and cartons were the most donated items along with rubber tires and e-wastes.

Over 5652 registered Kanegosyo and Rewards Plus card members from Davao, Tagum City and Davao del Norte attended the annual congress, exceeding gate attendance from last year's 4,062, in an event where wholesalers get exclusive rates and packages they can use for their businesses.
On its last day, the Negosyante Awards, held at NCCC Mall Davao's Activity Center, handed plaques of recognition and various gift items. Award hosts were Asia's Pop Idol Christian Bautista and Una Ka Bai's news anchor Sarah Hilomen.

Used papers, old magazines, box cartons, tetra pack juice and milk boxes are accepted on Saturday, August 28 at the mall's Parking C from 8am to 5pm in addition to empty printer cartridges, tires and e-wastes like non-working electronic and electrical appliances, CPU's and monitors.
Plastic bottles that are PET, as well as plastic furniture, hard plastics, cellophane bags, plastic cups and tarpaulins are welcome too.
Rubber tires that collect rainwater and provide habitats for dengue-carrying mosquitoes including used lead-acid batteries and flourescent tubes and bulbs are also accepted.
Prices of scrap items vary and priced on per piece or per kilo basis.

On May 26 , Calinan residents woke up to a new morning with breads, pastries and snack items from Breadfactory and Munccchies. Located across the Calinan Public Market, the ninth store brings its choice breads closer to shoppers of NCCC Supermarket.
"Unlike our previous outlets, we merged Breadfactory and Munccchies in Calinan to bring affordable products, not only to nearby residents, but also travelers leaving the city. Ngayon pwede ng bitbitin ang sarap (Now, shoppers can bring good taste). Our counters are easily located along the National Highway," adds Operations Director Arachel Ravago.
On the same day, the 300-square meter HB1 store at the entrance of Ruby Subdivision at Catalunan Grande offers residents with the ease of a pharmacy and a convenience store in one.
?HB1 is all about bringing daily consumer items closer to growing communities outside of the city's central district. We aim to help customers save on transportation costs while getting the same items from other NCCC outlets,? says Reescy Delos Reyes, HB1 Operations Director.
Aside from providing affordable medicines, health and beauty care products, and basic items, the 16th HB1 store also includes food items, office and school supplies, and houseware items.
Calinan proper and Catalunan Grande are accessible by public transport and can be reached 45 minutes and 15 minutes, respectively from the city's government center. Both areas are largely residential.

Buy Back Fair accepts election trash
Election campaign materials taken down by the Commission on Elections will be accepted during the Earth Day Buy Back Fair on April 24 at NCCC Mall Davao's Parking C.
?We would however encourage interested residents and groups to turn over election materials on May 29 instead,? says Tong Lumtan, Buy Back Fair coordinator for NCCC Cares.
According to Lumtan, ?clean-up and segregation can greatly help the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO). Every election year, CENRO faces the gargantuan task of cleaning up city streets.?
The fair will also accept items from 8am to 5pm like printer cartridges, busted fluorescent tubes (20 or 40 kilowatts) and tires used on multi-cab jeepneys, trucks and the like. Tires are priced per piece. Electrical appliances, CPUs, monitors are priced per lot based on buyer's negotiated price.
Paper shavings from pasted materials on walls and posts can be collected in a sack instead of leaving it on roads and alleys that clog drainage areas. ?The paper shavings can be sold per kilo,? adds Lumtan.
Also sold per kilo are old books, newspapers and magazines; corrugated boxes, tin and aluminum cans, galvanized iron and other metals; plastic furniture, plastic bags, PET bottles; and sea shells like talaba and kuhol.
Buying price may vary for used lead-acid batteries, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and motor vehicle depending on number of plates.
NCCC Cares' Buy Back Fair will be held every last Saturday each month until November, and on the first Saturday of December.

Buy Back Fair gives new lease on scrap
Think of it as a pre-program for Earth Hour from 8:30-9:30pm on the same day. You unload items you don't need, re-purpose it, and maybe earn a little, ? says Tong Lumtan, coordinator for NCCC Cares' Buy Back Fair.
The mall's Parking C area will accommodate 9 scrap buyers for individuals or businesses who want to dispose or sell recyclables. Rates will be given on site.
Printer cartridges and tires, preferably used on vehicles, trucks and the like, are accepted per piece. While electrical appliances, CPUs, monitors are priced per lot based on buyer's negotiated price.
Pricing for used paper, old books, newspapers and magazines; corrugated cartons, tin and aluminum cans, galvanized iron and other metals; plastic furniture, plastic bags, and PET bottles are on a per kilo basis.
Buying price may vary for used lead-acid batteries, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and motor vehicle depending on number of plates.
?Scrap sellers, donating individuals, families, and businesses are urged to bring clean and dried items for easier handling and better pricing. Papers, magazines and books should be secured by tying it,? reminds Lumtan.
Proceeds of this event will be used to finance NCCC Cares' programs on educational assistance and the environment.
