CHINESE NEW YEAR | MYNCCC.PH

The increasing Filipino-Chinese community in the Philippines has been very proactive and influential in all aspects of helping develop the country, especially in terms of the business sector – bringing in more jobs for the Filipinos and driving our economy. They have also greatly impacted our cultural traditions over the years which is why the Chinese New Year is one of the most-awaited holidays here in the Philippines.

On the day of the Lunar New Year, people are seen wearing red, as this color is believed to attract good luck. Traditional Chinese dances like the dragon and lion dance and wushu have been local favorites ever since with their fabulous fireworks, drum-beating moves, and graceful martial arts.

With our love for family and food, families celebrate the Chinese New Year cooking and eating staple Chinese cuisines like Pansit, Siomai, and Siopao. But what’s special is the addition of “sticky” foods such as Tikoy or Nian Gao. Eating Tikoy during the New Year is believed to bring in prosperity and good fortune as it “sticks” to the person for the entire year and the next year.

Filipinos are also waiting for the Chinese horoscope based on the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs with specific fortunes for overall wealth, career, relationships, and health. For 2023, it is the Year of the Water Rabbit and will be celebrated on January 22. According to Chinese astrology, the Rabbit represents peaceful and patient energy. Lucky colors include blue, green, yellow, and black. Lucky numbers are 5, 7, and 9 (and any number containing these) Lucky Zodiac signs include people born under the Goat, Pig, and Dog signs.

In addition, the immense influence that the Chinese culture has on the country can be seen throughout the various Chinatowns – with the largest being here in Davao (in terms of land area).
